As Saalim Mahmood’s three teenage sons had inevitably grown over the years, his home hadn’t. And so, the Mahmood family re-located to a new semi-detached family home in the suburbs of Chigwell. Whilst the new house was the perfect size to accommodate the family of five, unfortunately, the layout needed some in order to work to keep up with their bustling lifestyle.

Following a single-storey side and rear extension to the new property, the family chose to completely reconfigure the layout of their home to truly make it their own and maximise the available space, particularly in the kitchen and dining areas.

The Befores

Early in the planning stages, the family quickly realised that they rarely entertain or all sit down at the table together to eat, but that they do spend a lot of quality time in the kitchen grabbing quick bites, catching up, cooking or studying. In the hopes of creating a stylish space that would be frequented by all members of the family, the decision was made to remove a wall and build a large, flexible L-shaped kitchen/diner. For the Mahmoods, family time is key and this free-flowing layout meant that the space could be used by everyone.

Nisha, Saalim’s appointed Magnet designer understood that the Mahmood’s new home needed an on-trend kitchen able to accommodate cooking for the family of five, but that could also act as a casual hub for the family to spend time together. Nisha suggested adding a detached breakfast bar, seating up to four, to create a place where the kids can snack or study whilst [MUM TBC] cooks. With the use of sparkling White Quartz worktops and plush green and brass bar stools, the simple yet effective addition of a bar added a warm, welcoming feel to the room, truly creating that family-friendly environment which Saalim desired.

“Nisha could not have made the experience more enjoyable. She has definitely helped us to create not only our favourite, but most used room in our new home.”

Though the beautiful breakfast bar works perfectly for day-to-day life, Saalim didn’t want to completely give up on a more formal dining area for special occasions. Nisha suggested using the small section of the L-shaped room as a dining area. Due to the new open-plan format, this layout struck the perfect balance so that the space wouldn’t feel wasted when not in use, but would still feel separated enough to be special.

Feeding three teenage boys is no mean feat for any family and the Mahmood’s new kitchen needed to be fully equipped for the job. Lots of mouths to feed means lots of pots, pans and utensils so storage space was essential. Saalim opted for sleek, simple Integra Soho units so that the space wouldn’t feel cluttered, despite how many units the family required. Wanting a unique yet inviting space, Saalim chose the units in a mixture of Green Olive and Cashmere to add colour and contrast. Nisha suggested finishing the look with White Quartz worktops to add uniformity to the room and to tie in the breakfast bar.

The right choice of appliances makes mealtimes much more manageable. Six tower units in the striking shade Olive Green were fitted to accommodate two single ovens, a microwave, a warming tray and an American fridge-freezer. Matching wall units cleverly conceal the family’s unsightly boiler whilst provided additional storage space. The contrasting Cashmere base units contain a large hob, sink and deep-set drawers for extra storage. With so many useful appliances and smart storage-saving techniques, the new kitchen keeps the Mahmood boys fed and mum stress-free.

The Finished Result

Saalim said: “Initially, I was nervous about renovating the kitchen. I knew it would be one of the bigger tasks in the reconfiguring work we were doing in the new house, as we wanted to achieve so much in this one particular space. However, Nisha could not have made the experience more enjoyable. She helped us to design an area in which my family could use in so many ways whilst creating a fun and trendy concept. Nisha has definitely helped us to create not only our favourite, but most used room in our new home.”
