From Retro to Chic
Lee’s 1960’s bungalow, in the suburbs of Preston, was dull and dated and required a full makeover. It has now been wholly renovated into a magnificently modern home with a sleek, stylish kitchen to match.
Homeowner, Lee Slater, purchased the bungalow as a renovation project with the goal of transforming the retro property into his dream home. Lee loved the idea of open-plan space with a kitchen that could be filled with friends. This led to him adding a sizeable extension to the rear of the property so that he could transform the boring bungalow into stylish and social space.
Lee was a returning Magnet customer and briefed the Preston store to create a timeless yet contemporary design, similar to that of the Magnet kitchen in his previous home, which he said looked as good when he moved out as the day it was installed. He wanted a kitchen, dining and living space that would seamlessly blend into one, making for the perfect hangout spot for his friends. As well as being a great host, Lee is a passionate cook and his kitchen had to be fully equipped and up to the job. The bungalow’s original kitchen was a tired yellow and was overwhelmed with bulky appliances, a complete contrast to the new design which is both minimal and on-trend.
Owen, Lee’s designated Magnet designer, carefully considered all aspects of Lee’s lifestyle to create the kitchen of his dreams. The decision was made to remove an existing bathroom to add a 30m2 extension, running the full length of the bungalow, to the rear of property. This enabled the pair to design the open, airy layout which Lee desired. Owen suggested adding chic glass bi-folding doors to the end of the kitchen to make the room appear even larger and brighter, whilst bringing the outdoors in. The newfound space created the perfect backdrop to bring to life Lee’s fun yet functional kitchen.
