The Simmons' Family Kitchen - A MODERN CLASSIC
Hayley’s renovated 1930s house, in the heart of the suburbs of Leeds, was lacking a warm and welcoming family hub. The once cramped and hectic kitchen has now been transformed into an open, stylish living area that strikes the perfect balance between modern elegance and an inviting family space.
Having recently welcomed their second baby, homeowners, Hayley and David decided that their house needed to grow alongside their family. This resulted in the traditional closed-plan downstairs undergoing a sizeable extension, adding approximately 50 square feet to become a generous living space. Leaving out the back wall allowed for stunning bi-fold doors that flood natural light into the new room.
Hayley dreamed of a modern open-plan kitchen that could blend seamlessly into the family living space and dining area, whilst being separate from an individual ‘grown-ups lounge’. She wanted a complete transformation from the previous small and confined L-shape cream kitchen, that doubled as a dining room. The finished product needed to be fully functional for a family of four, so that they could keep an eye on the kids whilst cooking and keep them entertained with a designated play area.
Melissa, Hayley’s designated Magnet designer considered all aspects of the Simmons’ family life to create a stunning, yet serviceable space which occupies the new extension effortlessly. A deep midnight hued central island was positioned as the focal point of the room, creating a striking contrast against the dusk grey cabinets, whilst clever design throughout make the space child-friendly. With extra wide space around the island and a forgiving matte finish, little ones can enjoy the inclusive kitchen without a fingerprint in sight.
Enjoying family mealtimes is high on Hayley’s agenda and she reflected this in her choice of appliances, opting for two ovens to take the pressure off cooking for four. These appliances were cleverly positioned either side of a contemporary American style refrigerator to create a symmetrical yet efficient cooking station. An induction hob also provided the family with a sleek and safe option. Other family appliances are stashed away in a separate utility room, to allow the kitchen to fully fill the position of family cooking, dining and living space, making it truly the heart of this home.
Hayley said: “Working with Melissa to bring my family’s vision to life was truly a joy, I never thought we’d be able to strike the balance so perfectly between having such an elegant but functional family kitchen. Her knowledge of how perfecting your colour palette will give your space a particular ‘feel’ was second to none and I think Melissa has gotten our kitchen spot on!”
Melissa, Magnet Leeds Showroom Designer said: “For Hayley and David it was all about striking that delicate balance, and we all worked really well collaboratively together to make their new kitchen, part of the family.”
Magnet’s wide variety of kitchen designs and installation options, paired with the unapparelled expertise of its designers, means that every family in any house size can create their dream kitchen. When your family expands, as Hayley’s has, and your old kitchen can’t keep up, a transformation of the space can bring the heart of your home back to life.
