The Crombies' kitchen transformation
When the Crombie family from Worcestershire bought their detached, four-bed 1960’s home, the plan was to extend the original outdated small kitchen.
However, when the first lockdown happened in 2020 the couple began to re-consider their grand plans for a £30,000 extension and instead began to consider their space differently as they spent more and more time at home.
Laura and her husband Rian are parents to three-year-old Sophie and they wanted a flexible, sociable space that meant that they could all spend time together.
The rooms downstairs were out of proportion as, while the kitchen was very compact, the living room was larger than they needed. Laura, an interiors journalist, printed out some floor plans, started playing around with alternative layouts and the couple decided to switch the rooms around rather than opt for the added expense and disruption of an extension.
The large lounge space was elegantly transformed into a beautiful open-plan kitchen which has become the focal point of the home, creating the country-chic inspired kitchen-diner they always dreamed of and the old kitchen a cosy formal lounge.
Laura and Rian had a virtual design consultation with Magnet to plan their stunning kitchen with expert designer, Kim Edginton.
They briefed her to bring their ‘modern take on a traditional style’ vision to life. Kim curated a picture-perfect palette of colours, combining Midnight Navy and Dove Grey Shaker units with Old Classic White Quartz worktops. This gave the kitchen a bright and spacious feel, and the modern take on Shaker style with dual-toned frontals gave the kitchen a bespoke look.
Plenty of storage solutions were incorporated into the design to provide the family with lots of clutter-free surface space. They chose an integrated AEG double oven, induction hob, integrated fridge-freezer and dishwasher so the top spec appliances were woven into the kitchen in a sleek and stylish way. White natural quartz added a touch of sleek and luxurious glamour.
In keeping with her modern design, Laura opted for an eye-catching feature island for that extra wow factor and multi-functional, practical touch. She included a large dining area within the kitchen with plenty of space to socialise and for Sophie to play in.
“For all of the homeowners out there who are considering spending all their savings on an extension, they should think twice and see how they can best use the space they already have, we know we’re glad we did!” says Laura.
She went on to say, “The team at Magnet were amazing, our dedicated designer produced amazing designs of our new kitchen and we could finally begin to picture our outdated living room as the modern country kitchen we’ve always wanted. Everything was delivered and installed safely and securely, in keeping with Government guidelines, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results.”
