Small Kitchen Colour Ideas: Choosing the Right Combination

Having a small kitchen doesn’t mean that your design and colour ideas can’t be big, so here’s some inspiration to help you make the most of the space.

Small kitchens can pose unique interior design challenges, but with the right approach, you can transform your compact kitchen into a stylish and functional room that maximises every inch of available space.

In this article, we share our practical tips for choosing a small kitchen colour scheme that is both visually appealing and highly functional.

Small kitchen colour schemes

The best colours for a small kitchen include white, light grey, and neutral tones. Light shades will make the space feel more open and airy, but if these colours don’t suit you, then there are plenty of other options (keep scrolling for more on this).

Neutral and light colours

Light and neutral colours can make even the smallest of rooms feel spacious. Opt for a paint scheme that includes whites, light greys, or cream. These colours will make your space feel more open, creating a fresh, airy ambience.

Light-coloured walls are also easy to pair with other kitchen elements, such as your cabinets and countertops, creating a cohesive look. Choose light-coloured cabinetry, such as white or light wood, to create a bright, open feel in your small kitchen.

White quartz or marble countertops are another way to add brightness and elegance to a small space. For added visual interest, consider installing a contrasting splashback or open shelving.

Light-coloured accessories also add visual interest and create a cohesive look by tying your colour scheme together. Choose dishware, cookware, and linens in a harmonious colour that blends with your overall kitchen palette. This works particularly well if you’re aiming for a minimalist look.

Glass storage jars, pendant lights for overhead lighting, and neutral rugs make ideal small kitchen accessories.

Flooring is another important element in your kitchen that can impact the overall aesthetic. Consider light wood, laminate, or a light-coloured tile to create a cohesive and open feel in your small kitchen.

Light-coloured flooring provides a neutral base, allowing other design elements to stand out. If you prefer darker flooring, consider using light-coloured rugs or runners to add a contrasting element while still maintaining the overall light colour scheme.

Dark small kitchen colours

Having a small kitchen doesn’t mean you have to avoid dark colours. A dark colour scheme can add drama, depth, and warmth to your small kitchen, transforming it into a stylish and inviting space.

Dark colours like navy blue, charcoal grey and deep green can instantly make a statement and add a bold focal point to your kitchen.

Consider using dark colours for your walls and cabinetry to create a sense of depth, making the space feel larger than it actually is. Adding depth in this way can make your kitchen feel more dynamic and interesting.

Dark colours can also enhance the beauty of natural wood tones and pair well with metallic accents, such as copper or brass handles.

If you don’t want to commit to an all-dark colour scheme, consider using a single dark colour to feature in your kitchen island or backsplash. The contrast between a dark accent colour and other lighter elements will create a balanced, visually striking effect that elevates your overall kitchen design.

Use dark colours and lighting strategically to showcase your kitchen's unique features whilst maintaining a cohesive, visually appealing design.

Pastel kitchen colours

Pastels are a fantastic colour for small kitchens, adding softness, elegance, and charm to the space.

By experimenting with versatile colour combinations, adding pops of colour, and mixing finishes and textures, you can create a stunning, inviting kitchen design that reflects your style and personality.

Walls and cabinetry are common places to incorporate pastel colours into your small kitchen, but don't forget about other design elements. Consider using pastel colours in unexpected ways, such as your kitchen appliances or furniture.

A pastel-coloured refrigerator or chairs can add a playful, charming statement. Think creatively and use pastel hues to infuse your kitchen design with personality and uniqueness.

Pastels can also be used as accents in your small kitchen to create a cohesive and balanced look. Consider using pastel-coloured accessories, such as cookware, dishes, or utensils, to add pops of colour and interest to your kitchen.

Elevate the overall aesthetic of your kitchen by incorporating pastel-coloured artwork, rugs or decorative items. Mixing and matching different pastel accents adds depth and personality to your space, while maintaining a harmonious colour palette.

Practical tips for using natural light

Natural light not only brightens up a small kitchen but also creates a sense of openness and freshness. The direction of the light in your kitchen plays a big role. While south-facing windows get sun all day, you’ll have to wait until late afternoon for the sun to reach you in a west-facing room.

1. Allow natural light in

Keep your windows and doors clean and unobstructed to allow as much sunlight as possible into your space. Avoid heavy curtains or window coverings that block out the light. Instead, choose sheer or very thin curtains that let sunlight through.

You might also consider replacing your doors with glass alternatives or adding skylights or light tubes to bring in more natural light from above. Skylights are windows installed on the roof, while light tubes are reflective tubes that channel natural light from the roof to the interior of a space.

2. Choose reflective surfaces

Light-coloured walls, cabinetry, and countertops can help reflect natural light, creating the illusion of more space.

Consider using glossy or mirrored finishes for splashbacks, countertops, and appliances. These surfaces will amplify the natural light, making the space feel brighter and more luminous.

Be mindful of the placement of these reflective surfaces to ensure they bounce light in the desired direction and avoid creating glare.

3. Opt for lower cabinets

Opting for lower cabinets or open shelves in your small kitchen will allow more light to flow through the space. Tall and bulky cabinets can block natural light and make the kitchen feel cramped.

Open shelves or glass-front cabinets can also be used to display dishes or glassware, adding a decorative touch while still allowing light to pass through.

Storage and organisation tips

After choosing a small kitchen paint colour, the next best thing you can do is declutter. In true Marie Kondo style, if you don’t need it, use it, or it doesn’t bring you joy, then get rid of it or at least hide it away! Decluttering is one of the best ways to create the illusion of having more space.

Use clever storage solutions to give a home to all the things currently taking up room on your countertop.

  • Invest in a pull-out larder to make the most of the space you can’t currently get to at the back of your cupboards.
  • Clever corner storage will help you to access those hard-to-reach bits of your kitchen that aren’t fulfilling their potential.
  • Use open shelving to display cookbooks and utensils – mix in decorative items like plants and artwork.
  • Get labelling – make finding the things you use regularly easier with well-organised cupboards and clear labels.
