Types of kitchen cupboards

Before you dive into planning your room layout, get to know the types of units that will make up your kitchen. Our pre-assembled cabinets are available in three finishes: oak, anthracite, and white. If you prefer the DIY approach, our flat-pack cabinets come in white as standard, our most popular colour.

Base cabinets

Base cabinets are the foundation of your kitchen, from which you’ll build up everything else. Your Magnet kitchen designer will help you pick the correct type of kitchen cupboards to maximise storage space in your room. Once you’ve nailed the base cabinets, it’s time to choose your doors, along with matching plinths and cornices, to create an integrated but seamless look.

Wall cabinets

Wall cabinets are ideal for storing dried food, crockery and glassware. Choose a cupboard door style and colour to complement your base cabinets, or dare to be different and pick a contrasting colour to add a striking element to your kitchen design. To make life easier, we’ve designed a range of clever hacks for your wall cabinets, from hidden drop-down storage to motorised shelving. If wall cabinets don’t fit with your kitchen goals, consider open shelving instead.

Tall cabinets

Tall cupboards extend from floor to ceiling with ample space for shelves, drawers, or wire baskets. Alternatively, leave this area free of shelving and use it to keep your bulky items, such as your mop and bucket. Our larder storage solutions are the ultimate kitchen life hack. Choose from height-adjustable trays, pull-out larder shelving, and 360° rotating shelves for those hard-to-reach areas.

Kitchen door styles

The cabinets are the first thing most people notice about a kitchen. Picking the style and colour of your kitchen cupboard doors is your opportunity to shape the room’s atmosphere and make a lasting first impression.

Modern or traditional, light and airy or dark and brooding, gloss or matt – whatever kitchen door style you choose, it should complement your overall design goals. For a traditional look, Shaker-style wooden kitchen cabinets ooze rich warmth. While handleless kitchen cupboard doors in a neutral gloss finish are the perfect choice for a sleek, modern kitchen design.

Once you’ve settled on a style, colour, and finish for your doors, consider the type of handles you’d like. Ergonomic functionality is essential, but aesthetic appeal is also important. Our door handles are available in a range of finishes and sizes. Consider the size of the cabinet or drawer when selecting the appropriate hardware – larger units may benefit from longer handles for a proportional look.

How to care for your kitchen cabinets

Your kitchen is built to last a lifetime, and while you’re making memories, your cabinets are in the splash zone! Luckily, taking care of them is easy. A damp cloth and a mild detergent are all you need to keep your kitchen cabinets and doors looking pristine.

Follow our top tips for cleaning success:

  1. Start by mixing a solution of warm water and a mild detergent.
  2. Using a soft cloth or sponge, gently wipe down the cabinet surfaces, paying attention to areas with built-up grime or grease.
  3. For stubborn stains, apply a paste made from baking soda and water to the affected areas, then gently scrub.
  4. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the cabinet finish.
  5. Dry the cabinets thoroughly with a clean cloth to prevent water damage.
  6. Finish by polishing wooden cabinets with a suitable wood cleaner or polish for added shine and protection.

Magnet kitchens are built to the highest standards, backed by a lifetime guarantee. We test every product in-house and work with FIRA and TrustMark to deliver performance you can rely on, every time.

How to organise your kitchen cabinets

Start by decluttering and removing items you no longer use. Group similar items together, such as pots, pans, and utensils, and designate specific cabinet areas for each category. Consider using storage containers or adjustable shelving to maximise space and create a tidy arrangement. Arrange frequently used items at eye level for easy access and less frequently used items on higher or lower shelves. Utilise door-mounted organisers for spices or small items, and invest in stackable containers for dry goods. Label containers to make finding items effortless. Regularly assess and declutter to maintain an organised and functional kitchen cabinet space that suits your daily needs.

How to paint kitchen cabinets

Begin by removing all hardware and thoroughly cleaning the surfaces to be painted, using a mild detergent to remove grease and grime. Sand the cabinet surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth base for the paint. Apply a high-quality primer to ensure proper adhesion, and let it dry completely. Choose a durable kitchen-friendly paint in a finish of your choice—satin or semi-gloss works well for cabinets. Use a high-quality brush or a paint sprayer for an even application. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next, and sand lightly between coats for a smooth finish. Reattach the hardware once the final coat has dried completely.

Where to put knobs and handles on kitchen cabinets

It's essential to maintain both aesthetic appeal and ergonomic functionality. For cabinets with doors, position the knob or handle approximately 2.5 inches from the bottom corner of the door, placing it on the side opposite the hinge for a balanced look. On drawers, centre the knob or handle both horizontally and vertically. Ensure consistency by aligning knobs and handles at a uniform height throughout the kitchen for a cohesive appearance. Consider the size of the cabinet or drawer when selecting the appropriate hardware – larger units may benefit from longer handles for a proportional look. Ultimately, the goal is to balance visual harmony and practicality, allowing for comfortable use of the cabinets in your kitchen.
