Add a copper kitchen accent

Copper’s distinctive colouring and lustrous finish are standout features, whether that’s on a big or small scale. If you want to add a copper accent to your kitchen design without pulling focus, consider including one or two smaller accessories.

Heavy-bottomed copper pots and pans are trending in kitchen accessories. Sought after by professional chefs for its heat conductivity, copper is an ideal material for cookware. You might be used to seeing these copper pans hung up in kitchens and want to emulate this look. But whether you want to cook with them or simply display your pots and pans is up to you!

Copper kitchen taps are a subtle yet striking addition to the kitchen. The lustrous look of polished copper radiates light and warmth, contrasting with cool, hard surfaces like granite and marble. Opt for an unpolished, rustic copper tap and pair it with concrete for a modern, industrial look.

There are myriad ways to add copper accents, from light fixtures to cupboard door handles. Even your kettle and toaster are now available in a trendy shade of copper! Choose one or two accents to instantly elevate your kitchen style. It’s a wonderful way to give your room a makeover without investing in a complete remodel.

Copper colour pairings

Copper is most closely aligned with reddish-orange, ideal for pairing with blue. Orange and blue are complementary colours, meaning they are opposite each other on the colour wheel. This contrast enhances the vibrancy of both, making them stand out as a visually appealing combination.

For a harmonious feel, opt for a tonal colour closer to orange, such as baked clay, terracotta, or even cashmere. Tonal shades blend together seamlessly for a cohesive look that creates an inviting atmosphere.

Like copper, baked clay and terracotta are naturally occurring colours that pair well with exposed brick and stone to create an earthy, organic palette. You may want to consider adding other biophilic elements, such as wooden worktops, trailing plants, and access to natural light.

Vintage copper decor

Copper has been used to make cookware for centuries, earning it a reputation for being solid and dependable, while also being coveted for its heat properties. Over time, untreated copper develops a greenish-brown patina that has become fashionable in some circles as a marker of its age.

Vintage copper decor adds an authentic feel to traditional kitchen design, which isn’t easy to manufacture falsely. If you’re lucky enough to find an item of pre-loved copper kitchenware in your local charity shop or jumble sale, then keep hold of it!

Copper kitchen accessories have a timeless appeal that adds to their popularity. Vessels, pans, wine coolers, jugs, and water pitchers are all available in antique copper. But beware, the older the item, the more you can expect to pay.

Even one vintage copper accessory is enough to create a talking point. You could even use it as your design muse, building on it to create a kitchen design with a corresponding colour palette.

Alternatives to copper kitchen accessories

Copper is the foundation of several other metal alloys, providing you with plenty of other options to explore.

Brass, a mix of copper and zinc, shares many of copper's characteristics. Both metals are strong, yet malleable, and excellent thermal conductors. Brass and copper can be polished to a high lustre to reflect light and add depth to a space, but while copper has an orange tone, brass is known for its yellowish golden hue.

Bronze (made up of copper and tin) is another popular metal found in kitchen accessories. Bronze is harder, stronger, and more wear-resistant than copper, which is why you’ll often see it used in specific applications that require a hardwearing metal. Like copper, it makes a wonderful addition to the kitchen, available as worktops, splashbacks, taps, and cabinet door handles.
