The pros and cons of fitting your own kitchen

Fitting your new kitchen is the final step in an exciting journey that started months ago when you began gathering ideas for your dream space. You’re almost at the finish line, but before you make it, you have one last decision to make – should you fit your own kitchen or use a professional kitchen fitter?

It’s tempting to save money by doing it yourself, but is fitting your own kitchen the right thing for you? Before you take up your claw hammer and jigsaw, consider the pros and cons of fitting your own kitchen. In this blog, we cover the benefits, drawbacks, and answer some of your concerns.

Benefits of fitting your own kitchen

You might expect a kitchen brand like Magnet to tell you that fitting your own kitchen is a bad idea, but there are some benefits to doing it yourself.

  • You’re in complete control: Doing it yourself puts you in charge of every aspect of the build. If you don’t like how things are going, you have the freedom to change the plan or simply rip it up!
  • Develop your DIY skills: Kitchen fitting is a big project that requires expertise in a range of skills. If there are things you don’t already know how to do, then learning on the job is a great way to expand your DIY repertoire.
  • Cost savings: Installing your own kitchen can be more cost-effective in the short term, as the initial outlay is typically lower than hiring a professional (we’ll revisit this later in the blog).

Drawbacks of fitting your own kitchen

We’ve covered the benefits of self-installation, but before you make a decision, there are also some drawbacks to consider:

  • You have limited expertise: If you have limited experience with large DIY projects, fitting your own kitchen is not for you. It requires expertise across a range of skills from carpentry to plumbing.
  • You need access to tools: Fitting your own kitchen requires tools that you may not have at home. To complete the job to a high standard, you’ll need to hire or buy the tools yourself.
  • Self-installation takes longer: Self-installation is likely to take much longer than hiring a professional fitter. The specifics will vary depending on the complexity and size of the job, but you can expect it to take up to twice as long.
  • Risk of making mistakes: A job like this requires precision and attention to detail. Doing it yourself comes with the risk of making mistakes that are costly to fix (or worse, they become imperfections that you put up with for years).

How long does it take to fit your own kitchen?

The size and complexity of the job will determine how long it takes to fit your kitchen. Fitting a kitchen in place of one that is the same size and layout is much more straightforward than a complete kitchen remodel.

If you're altering your kitchen layout or installing a kitchen in a new space, be sure to allocate time for adding electrical outlets and plumbing for water and gas.

Most experts agree that it takes between two and five days for a professional fitter to install a kitchen. If you plan to fit it yourself, it will take at least twice as much time as it would for an experienced kitchen fitter.

Are there any hidden costs to DIY kitchen installation?

Planning and preparation are key to installing your kitchen successfully. Before you begin, consider these factors and any possible hidden costs:

What are your options for kitchen installation?

Self-install isn’t your only option when it comes to having your new kitchen fitted. Consider our installation options or hire your own trade professional.

Installation by Magnet

Magnet’s kitchen installation service covers everything from the pre-fit technical survey to the seamless installation of your worktops.

We also offer a ‘wet-fit’ service, which includes plumbing, electrical, and gas work, so you don’t have to hire your own contractors to undertake this work. Our tradespeople are fully insured, Trustmark-accredited, and DBS checked.

Independent kitchen fitter

You also have the option to hire an independent kitchen fitter. Independent professionals can provide customised solutions and tailored expert advice. Our design team can work closely with your chosen kitchen fitter to ensure a hassle-free installation. If you have any questions about the installation process, we’re here to help.
