Creating a colourful home

We know colour is a key part of every kitchen and at Magnet we’re committed to creating the best range, which reflects current trends with longevity and authenticity.  This Summer we unveiled four stunning new colours: Harvest, Carrington, Chalk Blush and Limestone across four door styles: Ludlow, Dunham, Wardley and Soho which provided the perfect canvas for Sophie's creative vision.

Delighting in the opportunity to explore her love for colour, Sophie enlisted the expertise of our very own Senior Design Lead, Jen Nash, to craft a kitchen that exudes both charm and charisma. The result? A breathtaking masterpiece that features not one, not two, but three captivating kitchen colours - Harvest, Chalk Blush, and Burlington Red.

Effortlessly blending Magnet's bespoke craftsmanship with Sophie's exuberant new collection of Harlequin wallpapers too, Sophie’s kitchen stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the fusion of creativity.

Prepare to be inspired as this partnership showcases the perfect marriage of functionality and artistic expression, leaving us all mesmerised by the enchanting allure of a truly colourful home.

Sophie's design story

Why you have chosen the colours you have?

I just had a real urge to have a yellow kitchen. A warm sunny yellow is just so joyful and uplifting and I wanted to create a social family space that was infused with the feel-good vibes. Harvest delivers this in spades. Obviously, I was never going to stick to one colour when you can have three, so continuing with the warm colour palette I added the Chalk Blush for base units and Burlington Red to make a statement on the island. The Woodland Floral wallpaper, from my new collection at Harlequin, has these tones of pink, red and yellow within it, so I knew it would all work together perfectly.

Did you have any specific requirements and how did Magnet achieve these in the design?

I’m really impressed by Magnet’s wide range of door front colours which meant I could design something that looked original and bespoke. Colour for me is always the starting point for any design and the hand-painted range of colours mix and match beautifully together. Because this was my dream kitchen, I really wanted it to look perfect for me.

How have you found the process with Magnet?

Amazing! I really appreciated Jen, my Magnet designer’s, broad knowledge of kitchen design, especially when it came to planning in all the storage. We really geeked out on all the finer details!  I know that a messy kitchen is never stylish, so making sure there was a storage system in place for everything was crucial. Secondly the installation team were the absolute dream. I work with trades all the time, I even married a builder, so I really appreciated their care and attention to detail and how well they respected my home. We were honestly sad to say goodbye at the end of the project.

How do you feel about your new kitchen now it's finished?

Designing and installing your own dream kitchen is one of life’s big moments, so I honestly feel blessed. Our kitchen is very much the hub of the home and it’s made me fall in love with my house in a new way, because the old kitchen just really wasn’t working for us.  Designing the layout out, to meet our needs, has transformed the way we cook and socialise. I’ve discovered a newfound love of cooking and entertaining so everyone is benefitting!

Design Q&A with Jen, our Senior Design Lead

"Sophie was fabulous to work with and like so many people she shares some very common problems that really contradict each other – not enough storage but a desire for an open, light and airy feeling space, and a busy family household with different practical needs and demands but a desire for an easy to clean kitchen that looks beautiful and doesn’t feel cluttered.

The main challenge was packing the space with storage without it feeling overwhelmingly crowded. I think we cracked it! Pantry storage, hidden wall units in the island, big deep drawers and nifty things like a charging drawer for all your devices keeps the space clutter-free and easy to clean. We also used pretty, dainty shelves to display all of Sophie’s lovely treasures."

Sophie’s style is quintessential, we wanted to create a space that sings in her voice. The design was all about expressing Sophie! With her amazing wallpaper as inspiration, we had so much fun playing with the various colour combinations in our Create Colours range.

The final selection felt so unique, fresh and joyful but still retained a classic language which probably sums up Sophie’s style! We picked a few products which also speak this same language of classic with a modern twist, such as; the Quooker Classic tap in patinated brass that has some classic detail but all the incredible modern functions of a Quooker tap.

Or the Smeg ovens that have the classic detailing you would find on a range cooker but with seamless built-in installation and super functions to speed up cooking time! The worktop is also a showstopper in the space! The warm vein in this distinctive marble décor is incredible at tying the colour palette together whilst the glossy finish bounces the light around making this space feel even more airy and bright.

Good kitchen design is really all about innovative space planning and we really worked hard at this. There are a couple of customised elements that opened up some great possibilities; like stacking a pantry larder above the integrated freezer which opened up more planning space, or cutting the painted shelves to the perfect depth for Sophie’s curated styling or even creating a bar area in the dining space.

Kitchens don’t have to be rigid off the shelf solutions, we have so many tricks in our armoury to customise a kitchen to your lifestyle.

"After so many detailed discussions and following the journey on Instagram, it was quite surreal stepping into the finished space. The wallpaper design that kicked it all off is absolutely stunning, wallpapering the whole room really binds the scheme together and feels very homely.

The impact of moving the kitchen from the north to the south side of her home has changed the family’s life so positively and really that’s what it’s all about. Helping people improve their lives with insightful, innovative design is my passion and this was the perfect project to indulge that. Sophie is just lovely, she was so welcoming and the space we built together is just, well, Joyful!"
