The Hughes' Family Kitchen - Modern Matt
Abi Hughes’s Leeds home needed a complete makeover to accommodate her expanding family. The small L-shaped kitchen was transformed into a large, modern open-plan space, perfectly suited to both family living and entertaining, thanks to a large extension and a little help from Magnet Leeds.
Homeowner, Abi Hughes, decided that she needed a sizable kitchen extension and comprehensive renovation and reconfiguration of the back of her house, to create more space in preparation for the birth of her baby boy. The layout of the kitchen area was completely overhauled to allow for a larger, longer and more streamlined space, with the addition of bi-fold doors opening up to the garden and Velux windows to allow more natural light, creating the illusion of even more room.
The original L-shaped kitchen didn’t have a substantial amount of worktop surfaces, and the island was partly blocked off by a wall, creating an impractical, disjointed appearance. Abi’s goal was to create a sleek and stylish kitchen that featured a functional island, as well as space for open-plan living and a dining table, to truly make the kitchen the family hub of the home.
Abi and her husband, Will, designed their dream kitchen themselves, finding a compromise between Abi’s traditional taste in classic shaker cabinets and Will’s fondness for contemporary glossy design. They chose the perfect balance, the on-trend Luna Matt Grey paired with a Minerva Ice Chips worktop. The modern, yet simple, units allowed the Hughes family to style their kitchen the way they wanted, incorporating a pop of colour with a forest green feature wall and matching metro tiles, as well as adding industrial touches with dark wood flooring and matt black finishes.
Every expanding family needs as much storage as possible, so Abi incorporated handy cupboard units surrounding the refrigerator, to utilise the space as best she could. The addition of open shelving units in Nebraska Oak add both a practical and stylish element to the finished kitchen, allowing easy access to items, such as recipe books and tea and coffee, whilst being on-trend and allowing items to be arranged beautifully on show.
The enclosed stainless-steel American-style fridge freezer and hidden downdraft extractor incorporated into the island complete the overall streamlined design of the kitchen, along with the handleless cabinets. The Hughes also integrated a wide three zone induction hob into the island for a more functional way of cooking. The unusual shaped hob, with three rings in a line, minimises reaching over hot pans as there are no rings at the back. Putting the hob into the island added a social element to the setting, as the space also acts as a breakfast bar for the family’s morning catch ups or when entertaining on a weekend.
Abi Hughes, homeowner, said: “My kitchen is now the family room I have always dreamed of - it’s the perfect open-plan space for us all to spend time together. It has become a central part of our lifestyle, and we can now utilise the room exactly how we envisaged. The dining area and breakfast island mean we can enjoy family meals together, as well as having a better space for parties and entertaining once the little one gets a bit older.
“My experience with Magnet was amazing, the branch staff were so helpful in bringing my design ideas to life and we were so impressed with the fitter. The complete structural change was definitely the right decision for our family and has entirely transformed how we use the kitchen.”
Ashley, Store Manager at Magnet Leeds said: “Coming from a design background herself, Abi had some lovely kitchen ideas that we could build on together to create the perfect layout and design for her new family kitchen.”
Magnet’s wide variety of kitchen designs and installation options, paired with the unapparelled expertise of its designers, means that every family in any house size can create their dream kitchen. When your current kitchen needs to expand with your growing family, just like Abi’s, a restructure can transform your kitchen into the central hub of your home.
