If you believe certain so-called experts, in 50 years time we’ll be cooking from hologram cookbooks, eating a much more varied diet and sharing 3D printed food.
While that might still seem a little space age, these experts also predict that kitchens in 2063 will all be ‘intelligent’ and ‘multifunctional’, which seems a little closer to what we can probably expect.
Apparently, in half a century, we’ll be wary of eating anything but ‘hyper-local’ produce and will shun supermarkets in favour of fruit and vegetables grown in decorative ‘food walls’ in our own kitchens and gardens.
We’d argue, the first bit of this, at least, is already true – the provenance of what we consume is right at the top of most family’s agendas in 2013.
So, in 2063, the futurists reckon computer systems within kitchen walls will be able to control the speed at which our vegetables grow, meaning that if owners take a week’s holiday, they can simply opt to digitally slow the growth of their plants by controlling their metabolism.
It all sounds a bit Sci-Fi, doesn’t it?
They also reckon we’ll be breeding our own fish in aquariums built into our kitchen walls. If we do buy food from outside sources the packaging will be edible, too, meaning chefs can dice it into the dish they are making alongside its contents.
Let’s be honest here – not many families are going to breed their own fish, risk the kids adopting them as pets and giving them names, only to then serve them up on a plate with a Parsley Sauce, are they?
We’d argue the shape of our future kitchen, be that one from 2063 or 2113, is already being shaped in domestic environments we are familiar with today.
We’re already well used to the technology and gadgetry of the modern home environment. We’re accustomed to the space-age design and breathtaking innovation that has seen the kitchen become the social hub of the modern family home.
We believe things are changing, that the kitchen is evolving but, that the final outcome won’t look too dissimilar to what we know and love as the modern kitchen in 2013.
